What Should You Wear to a Modern Wedding?

Modern weddings are now much more unique. Rather than following a traditional path, many couples are now celebrating in their own way, creating a day that suits their relationship rather than a set of ‘rules’.

Just as the wedding ceremony is gradually changing to incorporate more modern ideas, what people choose to wear to weddings is also changing. Part of this comes down to the fact that more people are choosing outdoor locations but it is also a sign that we are approaching marriage in a more informal way. Couples are now much more likely to organise their wedding together as opposed to the bride and her family taking control.

As the ceremony becomes more personal, it is hardly surprising that people want to express something more than formality in what they wear!

The only problem with this is figuring out what you should wear.

Traditional Wedding

The traditional wedding is still the easiest to dress for, though if you are on a budget, it might be quite tight. Morning coats, jackets and silk ties with trousers are still the basic dress code. A pocket square may also help to make you a bit fancier without bumping the price up too high! If you are looking for a silk tie in a particular colour and don’t want to spend a fortune, Ties R Us is a good place to start.

For a formal wedding, it might actually be better to rent your suit rather than to buy. Though buying will give you the perfect fit, unless you are going to a lot of traditional weddings, the investment is probably not worth it. On the other hand, if you are not a standard size, you may find a rented suit uncomfortable and ill-fitting.

Finding a suit that fits is all about getting the measurements right. You don’t want to feel uncomfortable in a suit that is too tight to sit down in but equally you don’t want to be hitching your trousers up every few minutes! Use a measuring tape to measure yourself (or ask a partner!) before you go and try some different suits.

Different cuts will naturally suit different body shapes so don’t worry if you have taken all the right measurements and a suit still doesn’t work. Try a different cut and see which works best for your body shape.

Beach Wedding

Beach weddings are becoming more and more common and though the scenery might look amazing on photos, the sand can be a small to medium sized problem. Obviously, you won’t want to wear your best leather shoes on this kind of terrain but flip flops feel a little too casual given the circumstances. GQ recommends espadrilles as a viable alternative as they will cover your feet and look alright with a suit.

So now your feet are covered, what is the suit situation? You don’t want to be sweating a lot while the happy couple say their vows so dressing lightly is key. Paler colours are usually a good idea, as well as a finer fabric for the hot weather. You might also like to make a bold shirt choice and forget about having a tie altogether. There is a natural holiday spirit in the beach wedding so enjoy yourself!

Once again, getting a good fit for your suit is crucial as the wind, sand and heat are all going to have an impact on your comfort. On the subject of weather, putting a light hat on such as a straw fedora could be a nice touch, handily shading your eyes from the sun and keeping the heat off the top of your head.

Winter Wedding

The winter wedding season is fast approaching and as couple hope for just a light, photogenic dusting of snow, you need to figure out how on earth you are going to dress for the occasion. There are two main problems to work through: first is what you are going to wear outside when it is cold and second, how you are going to layer appropriately so that you will be dressed for heated rooms inside.

The right coat is a good place to start. Choose something nice and thick such as wool and opt for a more tailored look. Going for a dark colour that matches your suit is a good idea and adding a complementary scarf will help to keep your neck nice and warm. Go for a thinner knit rather than a chucky ‘Grandma made this’ kind of look!

Your shoes are also important and you should make sure that they are waterproof. There is literally nothing worse than accidentally standing in a puddle on your way there and having to suffer and cold damp sock for the rest of the day. Thicker soles are a good idea too as you will have better grip if there is a frost.

Again, you might like to add a hat to your outfit and bring an umbrella too. Unfortunately, British weather doesn’t often play as nicely as it appears to in romantic films and your are more likely to get torrential rain than the perfect sprinkling of snow. Bring a large umbrella: you will be expected to share!

Two Rules to Remember

The modern wedding has come a long way from its traditional past and though figuring out rather elusive dress codes like “smart-casual” can be a bit of a minefield, there are still two set rules to remember.

The first rules is that whatever you choose to wear, having a good fit is crucial. Weddings are long events these days and often come with multiple locations. This means that you need to be comfortable for the entire day and show off your best side to your friends and family.

And the second rule is simple: have fun with your clothes, show off a little bit of personality in your choices and enjoy the day. You are going to be photographed a lot so it is worth the investment to get something that makes you look great.

Suits of the future — how is technology influencing our tailoring

It is said that the suit that we all know and love today started in the early 1800s by a gentleman called Beau Brummell. He replaced long-tailed coats and silk stockings with the classic suit jacket accompanied by full-length trousers and it all went from there. But as we’re faced with new challenges (such as the lengthy daily commute) and as we strive to cut out time consuming activities (ironing a suit can be draining), what does the future look like for our tailoring? CT shirts, retailers of the morning suitmen’s casual shirts, investigate:

Past innovations

One of the latest in shirt technology is temperature adjusting materials. In many cases, this works by controlling the body heat of the wearer. Researchers across the US developed clothing that changes how much radiation escapes from the shirt and how easily air can circulate around the body. Although heat controlling technology in clothing is not new, it is only in recent years that it has made its way into wearable clothing when it was once reserved for those in space. This sort of technology not only improves comfort levels for the wearer but can potentially have knock on positive effects on the environment. Air conditioning (AC) accounts for an outstanding 13% of energy used in the US. If our shirts become temperature regulated then it is possible we will be in lower need of constant AC — reducing our carbon footprint so we all benefit!

Non-iron shirts are more than convenient. Enjoy an extra 10 minutes in bed as you pull your work shirt out of the dryer and put it on straight away — wrinkle free and no need to haul out the ironing board. The technology behind the non-iron shirt includes a process that strengthens the fabric, preventing the molecules from moving as much and increasing its resistance to creasing.

It’s important to be able to move freely in our suits. Especially when you’re sitting in the same place for a prolonged period of time, such as at the desk, on your way to work or at a fancy dinner. This is where the latest mechanical stretch technology comes in to play. This sort of technology works with the materials of the suit to improve its flexibility. Some suit jackets and shirts achieve this stretch through incorporating a small percentage of elastane in the fabric and this is enough to enhance the comfort of the garment.

Future innovations

Wearable payment gadgets are something that researchers and corporations are spending a lot of time exploring. Of course, we already have the ability to pay contactless with a smart watch or phone but that’s just not enough! MasterCard paired with fashion designer Adam Selman to explore the idea of inserting a microchip into clothing, perhaps in the sleeve of a jacket or into a bag — allowing you to pay for items with even less effort. This concept could have some effect on our tailoring trends as cuff links and pockets could become payment devices!

Forget buying multiple of the same suit in different colours, colour-changing fabrics are here to shake up the fashion industry. The research behind it is ever advancing and there are a few ongoing projects developing the idea. One of the projects, explored by scientists at the University of Michigan, is looking at incorporating tiny crystals that react differently depending on the wavelength of light. This affects the crystal’s formation and how they look in terms of colour to others. Other research, carried out in Montreal, is investigating how electricity from human movement can power electric fabric and change its colour. It appears that the research is a long way off from our high streets, but it is paving the way for colour-changing materials in the future.

The price of a high-quality, tailored suit can be quite high and many take pride in keeping it in good condition. It is then unsettling when a sleeve is caught on a door handle or on something sharp and the material is damaged. The latest technology in textiles is addressing this issue through the development of self-healing fabric. It works by coating regular fabric in a special solution that, when ripped, is able to melt back together at low temperatures. Other research has founded that E. coli bacteria has self-replicating properties and this is being explored in order to discover if it can be used to knit broken fabric back together.

From past to future innovations, it’s clear to see that our wardrobes aren’t what they used to be. Many developments are being made in order to make our lives easier and further enhance our suits to meet our highly digital and busy lifestyles.

Men’s Shopping Habits Today

Women are not the only ones who need to dress up to look great, feel good about themselves, and have more confidence. Men should too. Now that a lot of men are into fashion, they shop to their heart’s content just like women. The popularity of online shopping has contributed to this because the more online stores to shop in, the more products to choose from. Plus it is more practical and fast. Men and women have different shopping styles though. Men are practical shoppers, buying only the things they need (for the most part). Furthermore, men do not compare prices and items and prefer at times to spend more to have the shopping over with, clearly showing that they are not bargain hunters.

Another shopping habit is that men would rather shop alone. As much as possible they do not want to leave the store without buying anything and do not care much for sale items. The popularity of online shopping gave men the chance to be more stylish and experimental, enabling them to dress the way they want and showcasing their individuality.

One of the many online stores to take note of is Quizman. Don’t let your commute ruin your suit

In 2016, the Office for National Statistics revealed that 3.7 million workers travelled for two hours or more every weekday as part of their commute. This may involve walking, driving, cycling, taking public transport, or a combination of a few. On top of this, many men choose to wear a formal suit to the office to look smart — not ideal attire for a lengthy travel time! Read on as we look at some smart solutions to avoid damage to your tailoring.

A suit made for the commute

The suit that you wear to work shouldn’t be the same one that you wear to a wedding. Look out for the signs of a suit that are suitable for your commute:

  • Added elastane — this increases the flexibility of the suit and allows it to ‘bounce’ back to its shape after repeated wear and folding.
  • Elastic waistband — an elastic waistband gives you comfort during your commute, fitting to your skin.
  • Choose a lightweight wool that’s not going to cause you to overheat when you’re rushing to and from work.

How to protect your suit

Your journey to work can cause damage to your threads in a few ways, depending on how you travel.

From creasing

If you cycle or walk to the office, it’s likely that you’ll work up quite a sweat. Not only can this be damaging to the material of your shirt and jacket, it’s also likely to smell later in the day. Getting caught in the rain can also have negative effects on your suit as often it doesn’t have a chance to dry out fully throughout the day. Instead, consider commuting in workout clothes and freshening up when you get to work.

A great investment to make would be buying a suit that is crease-resistant — this way you can fold it up in a backpack and it will be good to wear when you arrive at the office. CT Shirts offer a range of ‘performance suits’ that are made with merino wool (a material with natural crease recovery). Their suits also have 2% added elastane which results in a crease-resistant cloth. This suit would also be suitable for public transport commuters. Sitting in the same position on a bus, tube, or in a car can cause your suit to become creased — not a great look for meetings throughout the day!

From the weather

Harsh weather conditions can be harmful to your ensemble. During the winter seasons, road salt can be damaging to your shoes and the slush and snow can have long lasting effects if your shoes aren’t dried out properly.

There are some preventative measures that you can take. Purchase a shoe spray which can ‘prevent and seal’ the material and decrease weather damage. One way to do this is with beeswax — this creates a thin protective layer over the material of the footwear.

For suede shoes, invest in some hydrophobic suede protector. If you find a good spray, this can cover your shoes with a waterproof layer as the spray repels water.

From dirt

You might find that spending time on public transport can cause dirt from seats to cling to your clothing. You should brush your suit jacket down every day to prevent this dirt from becoming embedded in the suit and harder to remove in the future.

Avoid dry cleaning your suit too often. Instead, for stains that are hard to remove, send your suit for a spot clean.
