Look Good, But Feel Better: Let’s Talk Men’s Mental Health

Looking good is important, at the end of the day the way we present ourselves says so much about us. Being stylish and well groomed shows that we care about the way we come across, plus fashion is a way to have fun and showcase our personality. However as well as looking good on the outside, it’s so important to feel good on the inside. Lots of mental health campaigns are being targeted to men in recent times, because as a gender we can bottle things up and not reach out for help which of course can make things worse. One of the ways we can take care of our mental wellbeing is knowing how to de-stress. It’s important to discover what works for you, so that when you’ve had a rough day or things are progressively getting on top of you, you know how to make yourself feel better. Of course, if you’re struggling with ongoing issues it’s important to speak to your GP. But here are some ideas for boosting your wellbeing and looking after your mental health.

Exercise

Exercise releases endorphins which can help with feelings of depression, anxiety or just general stress. It regulates hormones and can even help you to sleep better. If you’ve been struggling to drift off at night, this can make any feelings of stress worse and so one way you can try to help is by doing a workout. You could hit the gym or play a sport, you could go swimming, try a workout class or go on a hike with your family or dog. Whatever gets your body moving and heart pumping will benefit both your physical and mental health. As a bonus, you’ll feel good and your clothes will fit you better too! Exercise along with healthy eating can banish bloating, slim you down and improve muscle tone. Find something you enjoy, it might not be the first thing that springs to mind when you’ve had a rough day but try and force yourself to get it done. Once you’ve finished your workout you’ll feel so much better and be glad you did it.

Sometimes when you’ve had a hard day or a rough week, when you’ve finished work all you want to do is just relax. If this helps you to unwind, clear your head or forget about your stresses for a while then go ahead and do it. Don’t feel bad that you’re not doing something productive, giving your mind chance to rest and rejuvenate is well worth it. You could download an app like www.finalfantasyxvapp.com, you could put a game on the PC or console or have a movie day. Put your feet up and chil, you’ll feel far better for it afterwards.

Socialising

A problem shared really is a problem halved. If you have something on your mind, just chatting it through with a loved one can make all the difference. It can help you to gain a new perspective on things, or just the act of saying it all aloud instead of bottling it up in your head can be cathartic. As guys, we’re not always the best at opening up but doing so is really important if you’re feeling stressed. Even just meeting friends, having fun and laughing can make you feel better and is something we all need in our lives.
